Literature Review of Technopoly  The third literature review is of the book Technopoly by Neil Postman. This book looks at the cultures of the planet and how they have been changed by technology.  Also looks at what Technology does to established norms and what may our altered culture, cities and lives may look like in the near future if we surrender to this phenomena, technopoly. In the books introduction the author tells an interesting story of how we personify technology as we do with a friend. Giving technology such qualities simply because it brings advantages to our personal lives,   “In fact most people believe that technology is a staunch friend. It makes life easier, cleaner, longer.   Can anyone ask more of a friend?   Second because of its lengthy intimate and inevitable relationship with culture, technology does not invite a close examination of its own consequences..” This very ideal of blind friendship and lack of scepticism to...

Angels, Demons and Celestial beings

Image
This body of text is a gathering of sources regarding the description visual features and origins of angelic demonic and celestial entries from various cultures and societies. The following researched information is to inform the conceptualisation of the Overlord alien design for the film adaptation of Childhoods end. Before exploration of specific demonic traits beneficial to the Overlords visual research a brief  look at the origin and etymology of the character and its trait is established. This diagram was found to be useful in explaining the stories major plot evens. Also what provided is the a review of the book which examines the stories overlapping and even changing situation between the main human characters and the Overlord aliens. Wow! Wait, What? Wow!: Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End Jo Walton, 2012 tor.com You’ve got to like having the rug pulled out from under you to enjoy this book, and when I was twelve I wasn’t at all sure about it. People talk about SF written now that can only be read by people familiar with how SF works. If there ever was a book that epitomises that it’s Childhood’s End . It’s a roller coaster ride that relies on you lulling you into thinking you know what it’s doing and then shocking you out of that. It’s a very post-modern book in some ways, very meta, especially for something written in 1953. And for it to work properly, you have to know SF, SF expectations, the kinds of things SF normally does, so that you can sett...

In Services of the Machine?

Technoculture and Critical Theory Book Review Technoculture and Critical Theory - In Services of the Machine?  is the second book I am examining with regard to my research question and the key message from Childhoods End in technology and futurology. It is predominately the analysis and theorisation by Simon Cooper, into  humanities technological progress domination and exploration, but also its consequences; the ‘technocratic antihuman paradigm.’ Critical theory is used on Techocuture of the late 20th century to explore the complex relationship technology has with politics and culture. Cooper also discusses the effect technological change towards our culture in the eyes of modern writers and philosophers.   In the books abstract it states  “Technoculture and Critical Theory, theories the ambivalence most of us register towards technological progress.”  This refers to the border argument between determinism and ambivalence and how each vie...

Overcomplicated, literature review

Image
One of the first areas of research I conducted into futurology was reading and comprehending the findings and research of a contemporary futurist and scientist, Samuel Arbesman. His book Overcomplicated studies and examines our overcomplicated technological systems of past and the present in order to predict what the future will hold for us and our inventions. I picked the most relevant chapters to read, which would aid my research into understanding science and today technological systems.  Going form Machio Kakus quote in my earlier research,  'If you want to understand the future you have to understand Physics' Our technology is the fruits to our understanding and mastery of physics. In that same order I will work to understanding the physics behind our current technology and in turn this will aid the predictions of future technology to design for Childhoods End. By no surprise Arbesman's entire book was relevant and helpful. However I'm not going ...
